What is an Art Therapist?

Art therapists (or art psychotherapists, both titles are interchangeable) is someone who has undertaken a training in art therapy approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). In the UK art therapists are statutorily regulated by the HCPC and must be on this register to practise legally.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative media such as drawing, painting, collage, colouring, and sculpting as a means of expression and communication. It’s distinct from an instructional art class in which you are taught artistic skills or techniques and is accessible to anyone, irrespective of ability or background.

With the guidance of an accredited art therapist, clients can decipher the nonverbal messages, symbols, and metaphors often found in these art forms. This will lead to a better understanding of their feelings and behaviour so they can move on to resolve deeper issues.

Things You Need to Know

The process of starting therapy can feel unsettling, especially for those who feel anxious about art-making. If you’d describe yourself as being  ‘no good at art’ you may feel vulnerable and exposed at first, although in time, this changes for most clients.
